What’s up with dzone?

18 01 2008

Man, the dzone site sucks. I haven’t been able to login with my account for weeks.I really wanted to vote on an entry today, so I figured I’d report my login troubles to them. I clicked on ‘send feedback‘. But what do I get? A friggin’ NullPointerException! Not even a nice ’sorry blah, we’re working on it blah’ with pretty colors, nope just a plain old Resin error page. In fact, I get that page for about half of the links I click. And as I had the same thing a few days ago, I guess they aren’t paying attention to the logs much (or they don’t care about fixing). If anyone of dzone is reading this (hello google alerts), please fix the damn site.

Update: the send feedback section works again. I submitted a link to this post. As some more polish, it would be nice to see a message after submission of the form saying the post was successful or something.

I have to admit, I’m a secret sympathizer to some of this. DZone as a piece of software needs a bit of QA polish.

Cheers Daniel. I’ll shoot an email and leave the post up until it is fixed as an incentive ;-)

Some colleagues and I were so frustrated with current java resource sites that we created our own. Its a very minimalistic approach (no voting) but we think you don’t need tons of blinking features to gather those few relevant links per day. Give it a try, If you don’t like it I would be glad to hear your feedback (mail at admin@jarpit.com).

dzone really does suck. You try to create an account with them and they helpfully opt you in to their junk emails. You opt out but if your userid is already taken and the page reloads… you are opted back in against your will!

Use an unapproved email provider (like mailinator or any of the top one-time use email providers) and they reject your account creation. Made me create a throwaway gmail account just to create a dzone account. Losers. I was going to sign up with my real email account to participate in the site but after seeing how they work… screw it.
